“Photographers in the portrait competition were asked to “capture the character or spirit of the subject they focus on,” not unlike what we do when designing a company’s visual identity or uncovering its purpose.
It’s about hitting a nerve and clearly conveying an idea—and that’s not easy. Distilling an animal—or a company—down to its essence and then expressing it doesn’t mean that it needs to be a simple composition to have a cutting powerful effect. In fact, rarely is that the case. “
