Intaglio/Engraving

Through time, intaglio printing (also known as engraving) has endured as the symbol of excellence for stationery, invitations, or other communications of import. First used by silversmiths to proof intricate designs, intaglio printing (engraving) was soon adopted by fine artists as a unique form of expression. Artists and their patrons marveled at the fine detail. Moreover, they admired the 3D effect created when the paper was permanently indented with every element in the design. The work had texture, substance, and quality.

Today’s intaglio/engraving methods involve etching an image onto a copper plate, which is then mounted on the press with a matching counter. The image is transferred from plate to paper resulting in a finely detailed, raised image on the paper’s surface.

Things to know about intaglio/engraving

  • Intaglio/engraving inks are opaque, affording a variety of possibilities for printing color including white on dark or colored paper.
  • Intaglio/engraving metallic inks contain metal fibers making them appear like real metal.
  • Size matters. Intaglio/engraving dies allow a maximum area of 7″ x 11″ or, depending on the composition, may require “split” dies.
  • Large areas of ink may require a screen to be applied when making the plate. This ensures an even application of ink.
  • Make time for multi-color projects, which require separate passes through the press for each color used. Registration is critical with every color that is added, and being mindful of the planning schedule will deliver peace of mind, as well as a beautiful project.
  • Burnishing is a second pass on the press without ink, smoothing the metal fibers in the ink. It creates a shinier effect for metallic inks.
  • Avoid bruising. Intaglio/engraving imparts a natural bruise on the reverse side of the paper. When planning your project, be mindful of the placement of key elements to ensure the bruise doesn’t interfere with other information on the page.
  • Placement of the image on the sheet is important, so please consult us prior to finalizing files. We can print sheet sizes up to 26” x 40.”
